My newborn son is up all night and sleeps all day. I think he mixed up day and night. How can I help?

He is awake all night and then falls asleep in the morning for all day. I am not sure how to make him sleep anymore, nursing him doesn’t help. Is there anything I can do? I don’t think it’s healthy for the newborns to have those patterns.

  1. You should create perfect atmosphere for sleeping in his room during the night. Make sure it’s very dark, shut the curtains properly. Your house should be silent, try not to make any noise until you make sure he is deeply asleep. Good luck!

  2. It happens sometimes. My daughter was like that until she was 4 months old and then it just changed without me doing anything.

  3. They all have weird sleep patterns right after birth, don’t worry, it should get better. Try to make him see a lot of bright light during the day, take him outside, so he is tired. If he is napping during the day for too long, wake him up.

  4. The temperature in his bedroom should be appropriate for sleeping. It shouldn’t be too hot or too cold. Open the window for 10-15 mins and let some fresh air in before you’re putting him to sleep. Babies like sleeping outside, that’s why chilly air in the room would be helpful.

  5. Have you started bathing him yet? Nice relaxing bath before sleep calms them down and they sleep better! You can also do some massage afterwards.

  6. Maybe it would be good if you tried to sleep with him a few nights. Sometimes it helps for babies to change their sleeping patterns if they are sleeping with their mothers.

  7. Try to keep him active and don’t let him sleep during the day. Then he will drift away as soon as the night comes! Adults also can’t sleep if they had a long nap during the day, same with the babies.
